Obesity Treatment
Are GLP-1 drugs the end of bariatric surgery?
A (Bariatric Surgeon): No. Surgery still achieves 30% total weight loss vs. 15-20% for drugs. For BMI > 40, surgery is more durable.
B (Endocrinologist): But patients don’t want scalpels. Oral versions of GLP-1s are coming. Compliance will skyrocket.
C (Ethicist): We are medicalizing a societal problem. These drugs treat the symptom, not the food environment. Who pays for a lifetime of $1,200/month injections?
D (Patient): I lost 40 lbs on Wegovy. My joint pain is gone. Call it “medicalizing” if you want, but it works. Stop shaming us.
